For purposes of his book Darwish equates memory with writing and forgetfulness with history. So his account of a day spent during the destruction of Beirut is a writing for history.
Muhawi, Ibrahim 1937-
Israeli planes are a type of devil, history rains on the populace of a city which seems nearly deserted, a wasteland, car bombs become Trojan horses, but all of it is a surrender to meaninglessness in an area suspended between life and death. His day begins with a search for coffee and ends with a yearning for sleep as well as a yearning for the sea because it's necessary to redeem a Beirut reduced to a hall.
